Father Mychal Judge Memorialized
At Equality Forum's National Religious Colloquy
Autumn Bayles, Chair, Board of Directors,
Equality Forum announced that the Board
unanimously named the 6th annual National
Religious Colloquy in the memory of Father
Mychal Judge.
Father Judge was the Chaplain, NYC Fire
Department. He was among the first openly
gay priests of the Roman Catholic Church.
Father Judge died on 9/11 when administering
last rites at Ground Zero.
"Father Judge exemplifies the contribution
of the GLBT community to our nation and
to organized religion. At our opening on
Monday, April 28th, Equality Forum honored
Dr. Patrick Burke, Principal, NYC High School
for Economics and Finance with its Distinguished
Leadership Award. The High School for Economics
and Finance is located in a ten-story building
one block south of Ground Zero. On 9/11,
Dr. Burke organized the evacuation of students,
faculty and administration. With the Towers
collapsing, he left only after going floor-by-floor,
room-by-room. Engulfed in the darkness brought
about by evil and believing he would die,
Dr. Burke, a devout Roman Catholic dropped
to his knees to say what he believed was
his last Hail Marys", stated Malcolm
Lazin, Executive Director, Equality Forum.
Equality Forum's 6th annual National Religious
Colloquy will be held on Tuesday, April
29th at 9:00 p.m. at the Prince Theater.
The Colloquy is moderated by The Right Reverend
Charles Bennison, Bishop, Episcopal Church
Diocese of Pennsylvania with panelists Rabbi
Denise Eger, leader of GLBT inclusion in
Reform Judaism; Daayie Abdullah, gay Islamic
leader; Reverend Barry Stopfel, among the
first openly gay ordained Episcopal priests;
and Mary Hunt, Catholic author and Co-Director,
WATER.
Equality Forum is the premiere annual global
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT)
forum. Equality Forum from Monday, April
28th to Sunday, May 4th in Philadelphia
has 76 events with 95 regional, national
and international nonprofit organizations
participating in its substantive programming
(www.equalityforum.com). Equality Forum's
mission is to advance regional, national
and international GLBT civil rights.
