Wednesday, April 30th: BREAKING NEWS!

Equality Forum releases a letter from Senator Santorum, showing his true views on equal rights!

Just weeks after our nation was stunned by the events of September 11th, 2001, Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania endorsed a solicitation for money for an anti-gay organization called Alliance for Marriage (www.allianceformarriage.org). Santorum starts "I know it may sound like a huge exaggeration, particularly in light of the recent attack on America, but this may truly be the most important letter I ever write you." Apparently, the "threat" of same-sex marriage was more important to Santorum than mourning those we lost in the worst terrorist attack our nation has ever seen.

While Alliance for Marriage states that contributions are tax-deductible, Santorum refers to the group as a "political organization" -- donations to political organizations are not deductible according to law. (See the article in today's Philadelphia Inquirer.)

In an April 7th interview with the Associated Press, Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania compared homosexuality with bigamy, polygamy, incest and adultery. Despite the widespread public outcry following his remarks, Santorum has refused to apologize or relinquish his leadership position in the U.S. Senate.

"Senator Santorum does not represent the views of his constituents," stated Malcolm Lazin, Executive Director of Equality Forum. When Pennsylvania's Junior Senator was 21 years old, the Pennsylvania courts abolished criminalizing sexual intimacy between consenting same sex citizens. In the mid-1990s the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Senate -- with approval by the Governor -- did the same. Nonetheless, Senator Santorum is speaking out on behalf of criminalizing same sex sexual intimacy in Texas. Senator Santorum in an April 2003 interview with The Associated Press compares homosexuality with adultery, incest and polygamy, but states that same-sex intimacy is better than pedophilia or having sex with a dog."

In 2002, in a Republican-controlled Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Senate with signature by Republican Governor Schweiker, Pennsylvania approved the inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) citizens in Hate Crimes protection. Senator Santorum is leading the charge against providing federal Hate Crimes protection to GLBT citizens.

"Federal law includes the protection of all races and religions against hate crimes, yet Senator Santorum continues to lead the charge opposing hate crimes protection for gays, lesbians, bisexual and /or transgender citizens despite the overwhelming majority view of Pennsylvania and its legislature," Mr.Lazin continued.

In a poll taken several years ago by respected Pennsylvania pollster Terry Madonna of Millersville State University, 73% of likely Pennsylvania voters supported the inclusion of GLBT citizens in hate crimes protection.

"Senator Santorum does not represent Pennsylvania. Senator Santorum, age 45, became the 3rd ranking Senate Republican with the active support and as the acolyte of Senator Trent Lott. Senator Santorum does not represent Pennsylvanians, but rather the reactionary right," stated Malcolm Lazin.

Equality Forum is the premiere annual global GLBT forum. Equality Forum is incorporated in Pennsylvania and headquartered in Philadelphia. Equality Forum with Germany as its Featured Nation has over 76 events from Monday, April 28th to Sunday, May 4th. Berlin's openly gay Lord Mayor Klaus Wowereit is leading the German delegation. Ninety-five regional, national and international nonprofit organizations are participating in its substantive programming. Equality Forum's mission is to promote regional, national and international GLBT civil rights.
