Tammy Baldwin

In 1998, Tammy Baldwin became the first elected openly gay candidate for a first term to the U.S. Congress. Praised for her commitment to represent individuals and groups which have historically lacked a voice, Baldwin has worked to advance the civil rights of women, people with disabilities, people in poverty, gays and lesbians, and people of color.

At 35, State Representative Tammy Baldwin was the youngest woman and first openly gay or lesbian member in the Wisconsin Legislature.

In 1986, Baldwin was elected to the Dane County Board of Supervisors. She served four terms as a County Supervisor, where she chaired the Human Services Board for three years and established and served as chair of the Dane County Task Force on AIDS.
