Phyllis Lyon & Del Martin

Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin became the first same-sex married couple in the United States at a ceremony in San Francisco on February 12, 2004.

In 1955, with six other women, Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin created the Daughters of Bilitis, the first national organization for lesbians in the United States. The Daughters of Bilitis provided lesbians a forum to promote civil rights and a safe environment to meet and interact socially. With Lyon as the editor, the group published The Ladder, the first lesbian publication.

For more than fifty years, Lyon and Martin continue to work as activists for the lesbian community. In 1999, the National Organization for Women presented the couple with Women of Courage Awards.

They are the co-authors of Lesbian/Woman, which documents the history of the lesbian movement and has been named by Publisher's Weekly one of the 20 most influential women's books of the past 20 years.
