9th annual Art Exhibit features Duane Michals

Equality Forum 2008 features internationally acclaimed photographer

PHILADELPHIA— Equality Forum presents “The Facts of Life”—a retrospective of the 40-year career of the internationally renowned photographer Duane Michals at Equality Forum 2008, April 28 to May 4 in Philadelphia.   The annual Equality Forum is the largest annual national and international GLBT civil rights forum.

The exhibit features a collection of portraits of gay authors, artists, and photographers, including Andy Warhol, Edward Albee, Gore Vidal, Larry Kramer, Pier Pasolini, among others.   “The Facts of Life” will include a range of work from Michals’ 40-year career, including politically driven works that explores issues faced from 1980 to the present by the gay community.  The exhibit presents new work from his Cavafy books, The Adventures of Constantine Cavafy and Ten Poems by Cavafy.

The 9th annual art exhibit at Equality Forum 2008 is the longest running annual exhibit of gay and lesbian artists.  “We are honored to feature legendary photographer Duane Michals.   This not-to-be missed show pays tribute to an out and internationally acclaimed photographer,” stated Malcolm Lazin, Executive Director of Equality Forum.

Michals’ work has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Odakyu Museum in Toyko, the International Center for Photography in New York, Musee de Beaux-Arts de Montreal, Musee d’Art Moderne de la Paris, George Eastman House in Rochester, Musee de l’Elysee in Lausanne, Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland, among others.   

Michals’ work is in the permanent collections of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Museum of Art, Kyoto; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others.   Michals’ archive is housed at Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh.

The 9th annual Art Exhibit is sponsored by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and is a collaboration between Equality Forum and The University of the Arts, where the exhibit will be located.  Professor Harris Fogel, Media Arts Department, is the curator.

Equality Forum 2008 has no registration fee and all substantive programs including the 9th Annual Art Exhibit are free.
